Get flood risk data
How to access flood risk data
We use a range of datasets to produce flood risk results in the Check the long term flood risk for an area in England service.
Technical users can find and download the datasets and put them into their own GIS or internal systems by following the links on this page.
You can also search for the datasets on the Data Services Platform (DSP) .
Once you’ve chosen a dataset you can select an area on the map and download the whole dataset or an area of interest.
Data you can get
You can find and access data on flood risk from:
- rivers and the sea
- surface water
- reservoirs
The datasets are not suitable for identifying if an individual property will flood.
Rivers and the sea data
A series of datasets are available for rivers and the sea taking account of the presence and condition of flood defences. They include predicted extent, displayed as one of four likelihood bandings:
- high – more than a 3.3% chance of a flood each year
- medium – between 1% and 3.3% chance of a flood each year
- low – between 0.1% and 1% chance of a flood each year
- very low – less than a 0.1% chance of a flood each year
The datasets also present likelihood bandings for depths of:
- 20cm
- 30cm
- 60cm
- 90cm
- 120cm
The following dataset shows the chance of flooding from rivers and the sea:
Risk of flooding from rivers and the sea
The following dataset shows climate change scenarios indicating the predicted impact for future risk between 2036 to 2069:
Risk of flooding from rivers and the sea – climate change 1
This dataset shows anticipated changes to:
- peak river flow
- sea level rise
- offshore wind speed and extreme wave height
Risk of flooding from rivers and the sea: summary
These documents provide analysis of the numbers of people and property in areas at risk of flooding from rivers and the sea.
There are two spreadsheets available:
- number of properties in areas at risk
- number of people in areas at risk
Risk of flooding from rivers and the sea – key summary information
Risk of flooding from rivers and the sea: postcodes in areas at risk
This dataset contains a summary of properties at risk of flooding from rivers and the sea at a postcode scale.
It includes a breakdown by flood risk likelihood category and property type.

Risk of flooding from rivers and the sea: properties in areas at risk
This dataset contains an assessment of the risk of flooding from rivers and the sea for areas at risk linked to properties in that area.
It can only provide an indication of the likelihood of flooding around the area of the property, not the actual impact on a specific property.

Surface water data
A series of datasets are available showing overall risk of flooding from surface water. They include predicted extent displayed as one of three likelihood bandings:
- high – more than a 3.3% chance of a flood each year
- medium – between 1% and 3.3% chance of a flood each year
- low – between 0.1% and 1% chance of a flood each year
If an area is not in one of the above bandings, a fourth category of very low is shown on Check your long term flood risk service.
The datasets also present likelihood bandings for depths of:
- 20cm
- 30cm
- 60cm
- 90cm
- 120cm
The following dataset shows the overall risk of flooding from surface water:

The following dataset shows climate change scenarios indicating the predicted impact for future risk between 2040 to 2060:

Risk of flooding from surface water: summary
These documents provide analysis of the numbers of people and property in areas at risk of flooding from surface water.
There are three spreadsheets available:
- number of properties in areas at flood risk from surface water
- number of people in areas at flood risk from surface water
- number of ground floor properties in areas at flood risk from surface water

Reservoir data
The following datasets show the predicted extent of flooding if reservoirs fail when nearby rivers are:
- at normal levels – reservoir flood extents - dry day (national)
- also flooding – reservoir flood extents - wet day (national)
Groundwater data
We do not have modelled data for groundwater flooding.
We use flood alert data to check the risk of flooding from groundwater.
